Letters to my Grandma / Pyaasa
Wednesday, 04/11/09 08:00 - 10:00
Nov 3-7 @ 8 PM

Letters to my Grandma is a poignant, courageous and honest portrayal of loneliness, the divide between immigrant youth and the families they leave behind, and the regret borne of actions taken for love. This unforgettable show weaves together the journeys of two women, a grandmother and her granddaughter, through post-millennium Toronto and Second World War India.

Pyaasa takes us into the heart of India, exploring social stratifcation from the perspective of the untouchables, a group seen as sub-human by members of the now-abolished Hindu caste system. Pyaasa tells the story, with subtlety and nuanced truth, of an 11-year-old untouchable girl named Chaya. When Chaya’s mother begs a woman from a higher caste to give Chaya a job at a local tea stall, Chaya’s journey from childhood to adulthood begins.

Dora Award winner for Outstanding New Play and Outstanding Performance.
