Vancouver Youth Theatre presented by The Cultch's Youth Program
  YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS FESTIVAL 2009


On May 18th and 19th, 2009 as part of the IGNITE! Youth Festival, The Cultch Youth Program will be presenting the Young Playwrights Festival 2009

There are three ways that you can be involved:

1)    Write a play

2)      Direct a play

3)    Act in a play

1) Write a play…

The Vancouver East Cultural Centre is pleased to announce the 10th Annual Young Playwrights Competition.

Submission Guidelines:

1.                   Artists must be aged 13 – 21.

2.                   The play can either be written by an individual or as a collaborative effort.

3.                   The play can discuss any theme or issue.

4.                   The play must be one act, with a running time of no longer than 45 minutes.

5.                   Do NOT put your name on the cover page of your play.  The title page of the play must only list the play’s title.  Your name should appear ONLY on this entry form.

6.                   You must number the pages of your play and include the title on every page you submit.

7.                   Send your entries by email and mail to the VECC Youth Panel.  Include this form in the mail package.

8.                   All entries must be postmarked by April 1st, 2008. 

First Prize is $600; Second Prize is $250; Third Prize is $150.  All three winning plays will be produced at the Cultch in May 2010!

2) Direct a play…

The Cultch is currently seeking talented, creative youth to direct plays for the upcoming Young Playwrights Festival.

Each year, The Cultch produces three one-act plays as part of The IGNITE! Youth Festival. This years plays will be staged three times (2 evening performances and 1 matinee) on May 18th and 19th, 2009 in The Cultch’s Historic Theatre. The plays are the winning scripts from the 2008 Young Playwrights Competition.

Director Qualifications:

-14-24 years of age

-A background in theatre and/or the performance arts

-Some experience directing or co-directing an asset

-Punctual, reliable and with proven leadership abilities

-Ability to work well independently, as well as part of a team

-Strong organizational, interpersonal, and interpersonal skills

-The ability to commit fully to the project

-Creative and visionary

Position Details:

-This is a voluntary position

-Directors must be available to start immediately, with ongoing commitment through March, April and May.

-Directors will be working closely with The Cultch’s Youth Panel and the Youth Program Manager

-The Cultch will provide rehearsal space, mentorship, and a modest production budget.

At this time we are seeking general expressions of interest from youth who are interested in taking on a director role.  If interested, please contact Youth Program Manager Corbin Murdoch with a brief bio and blurb about your qualifications for the position and your reasons for wanting to take on a director position.  Qualified candidates will be contacted for an interview

3) Act in a play…

The Vancouver East Cultural Centre is currently seeking talented young actors to perform in three original one-act plays to be premiered on The Cultch’s stage on May 18th and 19th as part of the IGNITE! Youth Week Festival.

AUDITION DATES:

Sunday, March 20-22nd

Please arrive with a prepared contemporary monologue and a copy of your resume. This is a non-equity position.

We are also seeking stage managers and costume designers. Please be in touch if you are interested in these positions.
