when I was a kid
my granddad had a sure fire method
to measure success
no second guess required
his method was inspired by the concept of reach
and he'd teach me by stretching out his arms saying
"if your goal is this big
then your effort has to be
at least twice that
and if at the end of the day
you still have the energy to pat yourself on the back
that's a pretty clear sign that you crossed the finish line without giving it everything you've got."

You only have to hear Shane Koyczan read once to be hooked. He is humane, furious, sexy, political, tragic and so funny you’ll be laughing through your tears.

In When I Was A Kid, Shane explores the finer points of growing up. A spoken word multimedia production, this show is an exercise in compare and contrast. It is a look at how fearless we were in our youth and how in growing up we began to put our creativity on the shelf and started to fear things as harmless as a wrong answer on a test. When I Was A Kid will be a quest to rediscover our silliness and to embrace our wonder; a show of both heartache and joy as seen through the eyes of someone trying to reconnect with his curious nature.
