“The Cultch summer camp has changed my life, period. I expected it to be a stereotypical theatre intensive – they give you a script, and you just do whatever the director wants you to do. But The Cultch Summer Camp is so much more!”
                          - Howard, age 14, Summer Camp Participant 2011

For two weeks in August 2012, you are invited to join us at The Cultch for a summer camp experience unlike any other.

You will be given full access to The Cultch’s state-of-the-art facilities to explore the fundamentals of contemporary theatre creation with some of Vancouver’s most acclaimed professional artists. Our company in residence, The Only Animal, will lead you through a highly collaborative process unlike any you’ve experienced before. Best of all, you’ll get to meet and work with other creative young people from across the Lower Mainland and beyond.

Expect to learn!
Expect to laugh!
 Expect to be challenged!

It will be the most exciting and inspiring two weeks of your summer, guaranteed.

“It was a comfortable environment to create, play, learn, and make some exceptional friends. I honestly believe the past two weeks have changed my life and have steered me towards a more fulfilling career in the arts.”

Company in Residence

The Only Animal
The Only Animal’s mission is to revitalize the role of theatre in society. It exists to create new works of theatre that are original, poetic, visceral and far-reaching. Our plays range from intimate journeys for small audiences to large-scale outdoor spectacles. We increasingly mentor and teach our collaborative, physical, and design-based approaches. 2005’s Other Freds featured the work of 35 professional artists and 125 community members in a musical-clown-boat-bicycle extravaganza about the possibilities of parallel worlds, staged on and around False Creek. Our signature play-in-a-pool The One That Got Away (created with Electric Company Theatre) premiered in 2000 in Vancouver, was remounted in 2007, and toured to the Magnetic North Theatre Festival in Ottawa. NiX, Canada’s first theatre of snow and ice was featured in the 2010 Cultural Olympiad at Lost Lake, Whistler. You and the moon, an intimate and perspective-shifting work for one audience member at a time, was presented by The Cultch in their Micro-Theatre Series. The Only Animal is only human, we strive to make theatre in a way that is sustainable, joyful, treads lightly on the earth, and works with respect in all levels of collaboration
