The Cultch Publicity Mentorship

2013 Publicity Mentorship

In today’s industry, social media is becoming more and more crucial in the world of publicity. Young people are among those defining what we do with these new outlets. In its inaugural year, the Publicity Mentorship Program aims to give young arts enthusiasts the opportunity to bridge the gap between methods of social media and traditional media and show them how to turn their passion into a career. This program will focus on new forms of outreach and encourage creative means of publicity. Publicists play such a key role in the performing arts, and youth are in a great position to lead the charge in this changing industry.

Publicist, Media Specialist, and Mentor Ellie O’Day will guide a team of young publicists with a broad range of interests. They could be writers, bloggers, twitter darlings, photographers or videographers. This team will build a publicity strategy around the IGNITE! Youth-Driven Arts Festival, the IGNITE! Theatre Festival, and the IGNITE! Mentorship Showcase. Along the way they will learn practical skills: writing press releases, approaching the media, pitching stories, and coordinating interviews with artists.

As a member of the publicity team you will participate in workshops in media relations, grant writing, and career planning for contract workers. You will work directly with the emerging artists in our Mentorship Program, Youth Panel and IGNITE! Fest to help build the largest youth-driven arts festival in Vancouver!

This program is for young publicists who are excited about the performing arts and want to share that enthusiasm with others. We’re looking for creative thinkers and team players! No experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn and a desire to spread the word about the great arts events happening in your community.

The deadline to apply is January 15, 2013.
