2012/2013 Application Information

The IGNITE! Mentorship Programs are 100% free. Anyone between the ages of 13 and 24 is welcome to apply; however, participants are typically in their last years of high school, graduated, or in university. Participants are selected by a jury made up of the mentors, members of The Cultch’s Youth Panel and the Youth Program Manager. In some cases an audition and/or interview may be required.

The deadline to apply is January 15, 2013. All applications must be emailed, mailed, or dropped off at The Cultch office by 5pm on this day.
The two exceptions are:
Directing (Scripted Material) and (Devised Material) is due January 7, 2013.
Playwriting (for 2013/14) is due March 31, 2013.
Due to the overwhelming response and number of files that we receive, all submitted supporting material MUST be PDF, DOC, MP3, or WMV files, SENT IN ONE SINGLE ZIP FILE, maximum 6MB in size. Please following this naming convention in submitting your ZIP: LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME_DISCIPLINE.zip For example: Doe_Jane_Dance.zip

Dance/Choreography 2013:
Application requirements:
- Completed application form (download below)
- 500 word essay (see application form for more details)
- A list of past performances, training, and related experience
- Two letters of reference from relevant sources who can speak to your experience and abilities as a dancer
- Video footage of a piece of choreography performed by the applicant that represents their abilities
- Sessions are on Saturdays from 4:30-7:30pm running from March 9-May 11, 2013. Please ensure that you are able to commit to these sessions.

Directing 2013 (Devised Material)
Application requirements:
ALL OF THE ABOVE MATERIAL for Directing (Scripted Material) PLUS:
- A scenario for the piece you’d like to create.
This includes the inspiration behind your idea, what it might look like on stage, and how you would achieve this. Please tell us the process you plan to use, and what your rehearsal schedule could look like. 2 pages max. (This is intended to help you formalize your idea and apply it to a realistic rehearsal scenario.)
(FYI preproduction work with your mentor would begin in February 2013, and rehearsal would be March-May, with access to a shared rehearsal hall).
- Please attach any additional material regarding your proposed idea that you think would support your application. This might be an image, a video, a quote, or anything else you can think of.

Playwriting 2013/2014
The 2012/2013 Playwriting Mentorship Program is currently underway.
To participate in the 2013/2014 Playwriting Mentorship Program beginning in the spring, you must submit a one-act play to the 2013 Young Playwrights Competition. The winners of that competition will become the participants in next year’s Playwriting Mentorship Program and will have their plays featured in the 2014 IGNITE! Theatre Festival.

Publicity 2013
Application requirements:
- The completed application form (download below)
- A 500 word essay describing why this mentorship program appeals to you. Please include specific areas of media interest.
- A list of any experience and skills that you think would serve you in this program. Example: writing for a school newspaper or knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite
- Two letters of reference from relevant sources
- A hypothetical pitch. Choose an arts event that you’ve experienced recently (this can be a play, movie, concert, poetry reading, dance performance or anything else). Tell us about it, why you loved it, and why other people should see it too! This can take any form you’d like, a piece of writing, a video, or maybe even an audio recording. The possibilities are as endless as your imagination.
Successful applicants may be required for an interview in February, 2013.

Songwriting 2013

- Accompanying lyrics

- A list of past performances (optional)

Stage Design (Set and Costumes) 2013
Application requirements:
- Completed Application form (download below)
- 500 word essay (This includes an artist statement: what you like about stage design and why you are interested in the Stage Design Mentorship Program)
- A list of past productions and experiences
- Two letters of reference from relevant sources who can speak to your experiences and ability as a designer
- A maximum of five portfolio samples (these can include theoretical stage productions) and a link to any online material.
