The Vision Impure delivers the Vancouver debut of Co. Vision Selective, a new project from The Holy Body Tattoo co-founder Noam Gagnon.
A series of solos and duets choreographed by Gagnon and Nigel Charnock, featuring film elements by Charnock, Gagnon and Kenneth Sherman, The Vision Impure lays bare the intricacy of human relationships and the dynamic tension that moves us. The Vision Impure plays with themes of vision and perception, exposing how true understanding between the one who sees and the one who is seen is inherently altered by the very act of perceiving.
The Vision Impure, choreographed by Gagnon and performed by him and Sonja Perreten, reveals itself through a triptych of solos and a duet (a few, all good things, the last sliver to go). Each piece of the triptych is set in the arid landscape of an arena where brutal elegance, strength, speed and ferocity meets and confronts desires. Two characters are confronted by external forces and their own internal desires; two worlds will collide and desperately will attempt to stay together:
"I am trying to find a way to speak about the "arena" of the world and the arena of our mind where external and internal forces have the power to push us into turmoil and chaos. Transcending is the only exit through the power that pushes us together and apart." - Noam Gagnon
The second half of the program features a new 30-minute solo titled When that I was, performed by Gagnon, choreographed by acclaimed UK choreographer Nigel Charnock:
"My mother, my father, my lover, my knees, my heart, my sweet sweat, my green tea, my addiction, my desire for your desire for my desire - all of this and more is in When That I Was.
It's a nightmare joke told by a schizophrenic.
It's a love story to make your feet cry.
It's the magic of madness.
It's the lie that tells the truth.
It's nasty, naughty and naked.
It's a good whore and a bad cop.
It puts the art in tart."
- Nigel Charnock
