longing: a strong persistent yearning or desire,
especially one that cannot be fulfilled
belonging: the state of being comfortable and accepted
in a place or community
What do you long for? Where do you belong? In this production, Curious explores longing and belonging against two contrasting backdrops - the vast searing landscape of the American Southwest and a landscape you can hold in the palm of your hand - the 10 ounce site of longing itself: the heart.
Camouflaged in cowboy shirts with fancy stitches made to hide broken hearts, and deflecting vulnerability with sequins and high heels, this is Curious at their most personal and poignant. Leslie Hill carries the exquisite burden of newly purchased guitars she can't really play; Helen Paris exiles herself to yoga retreats and detox diets before finally giving up and retraining as a butcher.
"[an] investigation into the dustier corners of human emotion, and that hidden, often-neglected place where yearning, nostalgia and lonesomeness mingle. (Be)longing is like a road trip into the atriums of the heart, or a song whose first chords fill you with sweet despair. The quiet power of Leslie Hill and Helen Paris's performance lies in its low-key directness, its quirky juxtapositions, and its understanding of the geography of loneliness and the myth of return." (Lyn Gardner - The Guardian 16/06/07)
Helen Paris and Leslie Hill are artists working in performance, video and digital arts. They are known for their edgy, humorous interrogations of contemporary culture and politics with work that has been called 'as smart as it is seductive' (Irish Times). Since their company, Curious, was formed in 1996, they have produced over 30 innovative works, as well as collaborations with national and international artists.
Leslie Hill is Principal Research Fellow in Performance Technologies and Co-director of Studies for the practice-based PhD programme at SMARTlab, University of East London and Helen Paris directs the MA in Contemporary Performance Making at Brunel University.

ABOUT (BE)LONGING - A 35MM FILM
This ten-minute documentary film was made in collaboration with the UK's National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and a group of inspiring African teenagers who were trafficked into the UK for sexual exploitation. Overcoming desperate situations, these girls built new lives for themselves in London. They now face deportation on their 18th birthdays under current Home Office rules.
